James Andrew and Maripol at Clic Gallery

When my friend Christiane Celle asked me to come to the opening of Riding The Hoods With Maripol in conjunction with a celebration of her friend Maripol ‘s book Maripol: Little Red Riding Hood at the super chic Clic Gallery I was beyond excited.

As you may know, Maripol is often credited as nearly single-handedly creating the 80′s fashion aesthetic; she established the look for Madonna’s “Like a Virgin” incarnation (rubber bracelets and crosses) as well as looks for Cher, Debbie Harry, and Grace Jones. She was also Fiorucci’s art director. In her guise as multi-talented artist, she photographed some of New York Cities most legendary characters including Andy Warhol and Jean-Michael Basquiat. She is as relevant today as she was in the 80′s, and continues to be a major force in fashion, collaborating with major designers like Marc Jacobs. A quite tireless artist, she tells us she’s now heading off to Istanbul to shoot the night youth scene for Turkish Vogue!

In Her book “Maripol: Little Red Riding Hood” she photographically chronicles her nightlife adventures and includes many of her famous and infamous fellow adventurers. The accompanying exhibition at Clic Gallery provides the perfect venue for exploring Maripol’s images, many of which really demand a first hand viewing. In an era where style and fashion have become a bit homogeneous, it’s important to look at the work of major style makers like Maripol who continually push the boundaries. There is also a brilliant selection of photographs for sale at Clic, so do make a point to visit.

Taking a few moments to chat with Maripol about her wonderful work at the Clic Gallery exhibition, I’m sporting a black wool flannel jacket, silk black and white hounds tooth check pants and black patent belt with silver leather trim and grommets all by Gucci, Tom Ford shirt in black and white cotton stripes and black and white silk pocket square, Lanvin high top sneakers in black suede and green patent, Seaman Schepps black pearl cuff links and my fragrance is Eau d’Italie’s Jardin du Poete.
